Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in India on Sunday for a four-day visit, aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between India and the Maldives. This is Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu‘s first bilateral visit since taking office. The visit comes amid an economic crisis in the Maldives, and both nations are keen to reset strained relations. President Mohamed Muizzu will meet with Indian President Droupadi Murmu and hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enhance cooperation, particularly in infrastructure development.
The Maldives president will also visit Mumbai and Bengaluru to attend business events. His trip is expected to bolster economic and diplomatic relationships between the two nations. India and the Maldives have historically enjoyed strong ties, but President Mohamed Muizzu‘s visit is seen as crucial for mending recent tensions.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed optimism regarding the talks between Prime Minister Modi and President Mohamed Muizzu, stating, “I appreciate President Muizzu’s commitment to enhancing India-Maldives relations.” The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the importance of this visit, emphasizing it would provide fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation and the people-to-people connection between the two countries.
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu made a significant statement upon his arrival in New Delhi, asserting that the Maldives would never act in a way that compromises India’s security. He emphasized that India remains a “valued partner and friend” and underscored cooperation in fields like defense as a priority. Although some view Mohamed Muizzu as a ‘pro-China’ leader, he was quick to underline the enduring importance of his country’s relationship with India.
In his remarks, President Mohamed Muizzu also acknowledged the ongoing defense cooperation between India and the Maldives, reiterating that security and regional stability are key priorities. He further emphasized his administration’s Maldives First policy, highlighting the importance of diversifying international relations without undermining India’s interests.
The Maldives president also extended a warm invitation to Indian tourists, encouraging them to continue visiting his country, especially after tourism took a hit following last year’s diplomatic tensions. “We value India as one of our largest trade and development partners,” said Mohamed Muizzu, reflecting his focus on rebuilding economic ties.
The visit also signals a fresh chapter following the resignation of two Maldivian ministers earlier this year due to a diplomatic row involving comments about Prime Minister Modi. Mohamed Muizzu’s India visit is expected to result in agreements that will drive future cooperation, especially in areas like infrastructure and security.
