On Wednesday, October 23, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a harsh warning to Israel, advising it to avoid further escalation with Iran as the continuing confrontation with Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon continued. His call for moderation comes as Israel has threatened retaliation for Iran’s October 1 missile strike, which marks a potentially hazardous turning point in the regional conflict.
In Lebanon, the situation continues tense, with claims of an Israeli drone strike on the seaside city of Tyre. State media reported that the military had advised locals to evacuate particular districts in advance, resulting in a huge exodus. The footage showed dense black smoke billowing from the city, indicating the immediate aftermath of the hit. “The situation is very bad, and we’re evacuating people,” said Mortada Mhanna, head of Tyre’s emergency management section, emphasizing the gravity of the catastrophe.
Blinken’s current journey is his 11th to the region since the commencement of conflict in Gaza, and it comes at a critical time, as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated substantially in recent weeks. During conversations with Israeli authorities, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Blinken stressed the necessity for a strategic shift. He added that Israel has achieved substantial military objectives against Hamas in Gaza since October 7, last year, and that it is now time to turn these short-term successes into long-term security advantages.
Blinken also emphasized the urgent need for greater humanitarian supplies to reach Gaza, where the prolonged siege has left tens of thousands of Palestinians in dire need. “Progress is being made, but it’s not enough,” Blinken said, emphasizing the importance of increasing aid for civilians. His words follow a letter he delivered to Israeli officials last week, which was co-signed by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, asking Israel to speed relief delivery or face legal consequences.
The US official warned of the consequences if relief efforts are not increased, noting that Washington’s legal duties require that humanitarian assistance not be hampered by countries receiving US military aid.
